Duane Dammeyer
Stone Sculptor
Duane Dammeyer
I am a stone sculptor working in a variety of different types of stone: marble, onyx, brucite, alabaster being just a few. I work out of my studio in Ventura, CA.
My work is shaped by a combination of education, life events and artistic influences. I received an engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati, a law degree from Ventura College of Law and studied art at Ventura College. Engineering influences geometric forms such as triangles, cubes and spheres that are seen in my work. Construction and stone masonry experience contribute to design and composition as shown through the integration of different stones into a single piece. Ribbons, with their folds and curves, provide a constant source of inspiration.
I love to hike. My interactions with nature have inspired the organic, fluid forms, clean lines and sensuous curves that appear in some of my work. Although considered primarily an abstract, contemporary artist, my work also includes representational and stylized sculptures of objects, animals, and human figures.
I take two approaches to my work. At times the stone dictates the final form. In these cases, I let the natural beauty and color of the stone dominate the piece, using subtle shape and negative space to enhance what is within. Other times, shapes may be imposed upon the stone—form and construction dominating.
With each sculpture I create, I attempt to generate, in the viewer, an emotional connection with the work. The finished piece is a give and take, between artist and stone as interpreted through the eyes and emotions of the viewer.
I have won awards at art competitions throughout California. My work is collected nationally and internationally.
