Joan Sharron
Mixed Media
While born and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey; California has been home my entire adult life. I have enjoyed Arts and Crafts from a very young age; studied Fine Art in college, including classes in Paris; but set my love of art aside as I followed a business career and raised a family of four children with my husband, Matt. I have reconnected with my artistic side and am enjoying photography, drawing, watercolor painting, and mixed media paper collage.
In my art, I strive to present the beauty of nature and the wonder of wildlife. As a young artist, I focused on drawing and oil & acrylic painting. In later years, I fell in love with watercolor, drawing my inspiration from the world around me, especially animals, capturing their unique personalities. Today, while I continue to create in watercolor; I have become fascinated with paper collage. I create my own paper; then cut and tear it in different shapes and sizes as I develop my composition which may also incorporate my photographs and items found in nature. I then assemble it together on watercolor paper or canvas. It takes a lot of patience finding the right paper color, design, and size; then layering even the smallest of papers to create the right texture. Viewers of my art have often said that they find my work peaceful and calming…a feeling I have during the creative process.
In addition to being one of the newer artists at the OVA Arts Gallery, I am a member of the Thousand Oaks Art Association where I am the Membership Chairperson and Manager of the TOAA Annual Membership Show, the Westlake Village Art Guild, the Santa Barbara Art Association, and The Arts Council of the Conejo Valley. My artwork has been published in magazines and recognized with over 40 awards. I exhibit in galleries and online; and participate in art fairs throughout California, the largest of which is the Beverly Hills Art Show.
