I love clay. I love that it is the product of stone that names the stone ages, and the same material linking lithic people with modern people over a bowl of delicious foraged berries.
I love the bowl form, the vessel form for its capacity to hold and its joy at being picked up and passed around a table.
I love the wheel for providing a beginning for endless possibilities of form; silencing the noise of choice and moving toward an aspired outcome—mutually agreed upon between me and the clay—is a new, illimitably juicy experience every time i sit down at the wheel.
Since preschool, clay has been my preferred medium of exploration. (Wasn’t it everyone’s once?) I’ve used various class wheels for over 20 years, but not until i moved to ojai in 2016 did i get the time and work space to feel fulfilled. In the home town of Otto and Vivika Heino and Beatrice Wood, with the generous folks of Ojai Pottery and Clay School studio, and at my Toughshed home studio, my cup is full.
